The above photo came from longtime WOKE announcer Wally Momeier who says, "This has to be one of the last photos of WOKE’s control room on Market Street in downtown Charleston. This is approximately what was behind the glass as seen in the WHAN photos. By now, Walt Mouring's Gates Board had been replaced by an RCA model installed by Gordon Knight.
"I do not remember when WOKE moved from
Market Street. I may have been with Harry for 5 years or so before he
decided to build [West Ashley]. I do remember the move. I generally cut
loose, even while on the air. Bruce Roberts transported and installed I
think, Gordon Knight installed as well. I did not even see the new joint
until it was on the air the next day. |

WOKE's Sam Rittenburg Boulevard Studios, complete with the sign from their original downtown location. (Note: The windows are fake! Due to security concerns, there were no real outside windows in the WOKE building.) This photo is from a postcard sent out to publicize their physical move. |

Everett Jones (left), and Harry Weaver on the Saturday Afternoon WOKE College Football Scoreboard. It was promoted as the "XX Annual Telephone Football Scoreboard." Each phone caller was on the air along with the hosts. Those who participated in a number of seasons included Jeff Warner, Everett Jones and Bub Soble. The person in the background was looking through the glassed-in enclosure at the "teletype" machines. It was the only quick way to get the scores. One machine continously printed the latest news and sports while the other dealt exclusively with the weather. |
